baby sign language

how many of you moms (or dads) out there have taught your infant to sign?
if so...what did you think of the experience...did baby pick it up quickly...did it help baby communicate better later on?
and if not...did you consider it...what made you decide not to?
I'd love any and all input!

we LOVE LOVE LOVED it... It really helped Cai be able to communicate with us... long before he could communicate... milk... please...thank you... more... water... and eat... (but usually he just used the milk sign for eat)

we just did the basics... but Cai AND I ... really enjoyed it... kept everyones frustration levels down...

Baby signing was great!
We haven't done a ton.
Basically, Ady learned 'food' and 'more' and 'all done' and that was about all she needed. I just did the signs as she was eating and about eight months she caught on. She didn't learn anything else till about 12 months when she added please, thank you, and a few others.

I'd recommend it.

A lot of my gfs have done it and it was great. My niece just got a couple of books for her son and wished she had started sooner. I'm hoping to do so when I have mine.

hi dayna,

i am a friend of sarah's and saw this topic on her little blog links, and i wanted to check it out. i have three kids, and with my two older ones (now 7 and 4), we used baby signs and it is honestly one of the greatest things we have done as parents! we started around 10 months with our first and a little earlier with our second. we chose a small universe of signs that were helpful to us--eat, drink, thank you, please, more, all done, bike, up, help, hurt, bath, diaper, where, big, tired--and our girls both used them like crazy. it is amazing how signing reduces a baby/toddler's frustration! less screaming, less tantruming, etc. we are huge fans. we now have a 10-month-old, and he has started using several of them. his sisters get the biggest kick out of him communicating that way! i doubt we will take a class or anything like that--we just like to be mellow and choose the ones we use a lot. anyway, that's my two cents, and i hope to meet you someday! we go to lake and are good friends with the scheidlers and stileses. have a great day! --maggie brandow

thank you all for your input! we've started with a few that we already knew and hope to get a book with a few more. right now Myka just stares at us funny, but i'm excited to see how she picks it up!
and maggie, thanks for all your input! hope to meet you soon as well!

We have a baby Einstein video that has some signing in it, Baby Wordsworth that Keegan loves to watch. He says the things they show on the screen outloud (ball, swing, tree, dog, phone etc.) and he has started doing the signs for them too. We have tried to teach him a few functional signs but the only one he regularly does is "all done" with his hands. I wish I would have started earlier...
